Kings of the Wyld- Nicholas Eames

GLORY NEVER GETS OLD.

Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best — the meanest, dirtiest, most feared crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld.

Their glory days long past, the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk – or a combination of the three. Then an ex-bandmate turns up at Clay’s door with a plea for help. His daughter Rose is trapped in a city besieged by an enemy one hundred thousand strong and hungry for blood. Rescuing Rose is the kind of mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for.

It’s time to get the band back together for one last tour across the Wyld.

I got to listen to the audio book thanks to my (hopefuly soon to be) wife, thanks to her for sharing her Audible account with me. This last month has had me facing some major family responsibilities so reading was a bit difficult for me. I am glad I could finaly finish this “book”, becuase the journey took almost as long as the time I’ve taken to “read” it. The novel was a surprising breath of fresh air and I can see what all the hype was about. It was comical, it was emotional, it was serious, even magical and it was fun to be a part of. This book was about family, the lengths someone would go through to protect their children, bromance, nights out with friends and revisiting the glory days. I will not be going into too much detail or spoilers as I have not read about all the likeneses towards rock and roll and a war group seeing themselves as a band instead of a mercenary group.

Stuff happens early on in the book that forces the Band, that have been in retirement for years, to reform and tour the wonderfull world of Grandual. Nicholas wrote and build a world that was easy to keep track of, the characters were well fleshed out and the cursing was well timed, I chuckled to myself more than a few times. The voice of the narator was enjoyable to listen too and the voices of each character was done as good as any movie I have seen thus far (please let there be a movie about this book…).

I gave this book 4 out 5 on GR not becuase I feel like being an asshole, but, even though it was well written and thought out, I feel the end was a bit rushed. The journey was amazing and fun, but the different detours to get from point A to B started getting a bit much. I would recomend this to anyone in search of fantacy with a lot of twists and turns, I would also suggest checkimg out Nicholas Eames’ post on WP in where he discusses the music that inspired the chapters of his novel, very interesting read(thank you lieverd for sharing that with me).

On a quick side note, something awsome just happened! The Man himself just liked my review on Goodreads! I must say its quite a weirdly awsome feeling. My first experience in the Book world of this kind. Thank you sir.

Hope everyone has a great sunday.

  1. Well, if it impressed you enough for a 4star, I guess it is time I bite the bullet and add it to my tbr. I’ve been holding off, even with a lot of good reviews from a lot of people I follow.
    *calculates*
So, I should get to this in about 18 months, Hahahahaa 😀
