The Rook- Daniel O’Malley

Dear You,

The body you are wearing used to be mine. The scar on the inner left thigh is there because I fell out of a tree and impaled my leg at the age of nine. The filling in the far left tooth on the top is a result of my avoiding the dentist for four years. But you probably care little about this body’s past. After all, I’m writing this letter for you to read in the future. Perhaps you are wondering why anyone would do such a thing. The answer is both simple and complicated. The simple answer is because I knew it would be necessary…

Dear Reader,

By the time you get this message, I will be sleeping my ass of, today has been a long day. I would like to say that the blurp I have used is quoted straight from the book, I have no shame. It is just that I do not like the blurps I’ve been looking at cause, yes you guessed it, it contains spoilers. I feel this paragraph sets a much better atmosphere than what I’ve read, or shall I say “read”, as this was yet another Audible experience. This is the part where I say night and leave you with what I thought of the “book”.

Lots of love and kisses,

Dave

XOXO (fuckit why not put a few more in) XOXOXOXO

Rook was a book I knew nothing of, I dived head first into this and I am surprised to say I rather enjoyed this. In my language rook means smoking and I am still wondering if this author was on some drug that helped keeping the monsters coming to the fore. Have I said I realy liked this yet?

Imagine yourself waking up in someone elses body, with only letters from your body’s former occupant trying to piece together who you are, cause wait for it, you also have amnesia, brilliant! That is as spoilery as I am gonna get on this novel. I listened to this book while doing office work and I enjoyed the company. I felt the huge cast of goodies and baddies were both equally vibrant and had well paced page time. Real interesting cast of characters in this one. I might go as far as to say I will be reading the sequal some day to find out how things turn out for our main character. We mainly see the world through her eyes.

I read this for my OWLs in Care of Magical Creatures. I have given the book a 4 out of 5 on GR and would recommend it to people that are into secret UK societies, monster/supernatural events organisers/disruptors. A little bit of reading about dresses and how the MC fancies her men. (WTF Dave? Is this a Mills and Boone book?) Nope, just a little bit more on the feminin side of writing, who doesn’t like to get in touch with that every now and then, only me? If stuff like that doesn’t put you off, your going to have a ball darling🙂.

Hope you have a great evening.

  1. Just so you know, the second book doesn’t have Myfanwy as the main character.

Glad you liked this. I have to say, I can’t remember the whole “how she fancies her men” thing, but maybe I just glossed over that?

    1. Its just a thing that poked its head out from time to time, amidst all the chaos she could fawn over certain guys’ looks and understand why the previous owner had a crush said person…

  2. Agree – this one was a ton of fun – I read and reviewed it awhile back. I actually think it’s one of the better debuts I’ve read in awhile. Halfway through Stiletto and enjoying that one as well. Cheers, Brian
