Metal Monday – Puscifer – The Humbling River

Welcome to another Metal Monday. Today we have a clear vocal-ed lyrical video. The metal part of it is that the lead singer is from another band that I have been listening to many years. Maynard James Keenan also fronts Tool as well as A Perfect Circle, this man is a legend in my eyes. He has a voice that has calmed me down on more than one occasion.

Today’s song in my opinion is all about conquering the fear or the unknown, facing that thing you dread while at the same time acknowledging what you fear. Fear can hold you back from reaching your true potential, fear can make you close up and isolate yourself. Just remember, there is always some one you can talk to, if not listen to this song and see if it makes you feel the same as I do.

Today’s post is also dedicated to Dani, who has returned from a hiatus. This song came to mind as I read your post.

Lyrics:

Nature, nurture heaven and home
Sum of all, and by them, driven
To conquer every mountain shown
But I’ve never crossed the river

Braved the forests, braved the stone
Braved the icy winds and fire
Braved and beat them on my own
Yet I’m helpless by the river

Angel, angel, what have I done?
I’ve faced the quakes, the wind, the fire
I’ve conquered country, crown, and throne
Why can’t I cross this river?

Angel, angel, what have I done?
I’ve faced the quakes, the wind, the fire
I’ve conquered country, crown, and throne
Why can’t I cross this river?

Pay no mind to the battles you’ve won
It’ll take a lot more than rage and muscle
Open your heart and hands, my son
Or you’ll never make it over the river

It’ll take a lot more than words and guns
A whole lot more than riches and muscle
The hands of the many must join as one
And together we’ll cross the river

It’ll take a lot more than words and guns
A whole lot more than riches and muscle
The hands of the many must join as one
And together we’ll cross the river

(Nature, nurture heaven and home)
It’ll take a lot more than words and guns
(Sum of all, and by them, driven)
A whole lot more than riches and muscle
(To conquer every mountain shown)
The hands of the many must join as one
And together we’ll cross the river

(Braved the forests, braved the stone)
It’ll take a lot more than words and guns
(Braved the icy winds and fire)
A whole lot more than riches and muscle
(Braved and beat them on my own)
The hands of the many must join as one
And together we’ll cross the river

And together we’ll cross the river
And together we’ll cross the river

Nature, nurture heaven and home
And together we’ll cross the river
And together we’ll cross the river

Nature, nurture heaven and home
And together we’ll cross the river
And together we’ll cross the river

Keep the fear at bay, kick the nuts off of this Monday!

  1. Not only is this one of my favourite songs but it’s also listed as one of the major inspirations for Aaron Dembski-Bowden’s novel, The Talon of Horus, which is one of my favourite books. Good pick 😀

      1. Yeah, he mentions in the afterword. Talon of Horus is the first book in its own series, it’s set in the years following the Heresy, so as long as you have a rough idea of how the Heresy ends you can read it any time. Beyond the obvious elements, (i.e. the fates of Horus, Magnus, the Emperor etc, which you’ll know from anything set in the 40k era) it doesn’t spoil anything from the Heresy series.
