Katatonia – July

Hello and welcome to the first Metal Monday for July. I have no idea what to do with MM this month so opted to share an old favorite that I believe has featured every year since I started blogging. I like the song that much…

Katatonia is a band that started around the same time as Opeth and brought out a a very doomy gloomy Death Metal album back in the day. They even had Mikael Äkerfeld of Opeth help them do vocals on it which is great if you are a fan of artists collaborating with one another. Since then they have evolved from Death Metal into more Progressive Rock experimenting with more clear vocals. I love that they keep on experimenting the way they did, as I am yet to give their latest album ,City Burials, that dropped this year a listen.

I do love July though the song has a little bit of everything in it for me. Clear vocals, catchy opening guitars, a great chorus part all round great production in my opinion. Close your eyes while listening to this one. It always gets me. I Hope you can relate to it as well.

Enjoy!

Lyrics:

You come clean
Waves collide now
Defenseless numb arms
And no voice of reason

So how come you invited me too
You knew I wanted you
You glide above
So this night belongs to you
I know this isn’t through
Are you dead to love

I see the bright lights
It’s the month of July
It’s violent here
Why have you left me
If only you could stay
And keep me in
It’s violent here
Why did you run from me

So how come you invited me too
You knew I wanted you
You glide above
So this night belongs to you
I know this isn’t through
Are you dead to love

Heat
Night devour me
Repeat
Repetition

I see the bright lights
It’s the month of July
It’s violent here
Why have you left me
If only you could stay
And keep me in
It’s violent here
Why did you run from me

      1. After Brave Murder Day I did check out some of the later albums, but they never clicked. It’s not that I don’t listen to softer music, not at all, but simply unexplicable taste…

    1. I do follow new releases. Some bands i prefer the older stuff, others i appreciate the new stuff. All depends on what my mind finds of it at the time. In katatonia’s case the newer stuff is a lot more toned down from the album July is from. I am just happy they still continue to put out records…
