April 2021 Recap

Today is already the end of April? Where has the time gone? April was not a month I felt like I was active on WordPress. A lot of this has to do with the fact that I am now working a steady(ish) job spanning from Monday to Friday. Over weekends Milou mostly works and I spend most of my time just being a couch potato. Either binge watching a series I started long ago or spending too many hours behind the Playstation 3. As I have a lot of games I still need to play, current financial crunches paired with the fact that we were both jobless for a few months no thanks to the pandemic, just means that it will be a while before I pick up something new. My gaming also extends to my mobile phone where I can spend the whole day just kicking ass and taking names while forgetting that the world is going to shit. I have been itching to get a Gaming section added to my blog, but I am scared of screwing that up. Very much like writing a review for movie novelizations after seeing the film. I have been wondering if I could ever write a movie to book comparison review and I guess I will never know if I do not try. I am currently audio booking The Prestige and it keeps nagging at me that I should at least try, so if you do see a new Title Theme popping up somewhere do not be alarmed… For the Game reviews I will still be using the Distraction Dinsdag tag because it is exactly the right title that keeps me from completing more books.

Talking about books:

Damn that previous paragraph turned into a long winded elaboration… Book wise I have done great in April. I wrote six book reviews. Some reviews I am really happy with others I spent less time with so they turned into very abreviated things. Especially concerning the last two for Alita. Apart from that small little let down from me personally, I am happy to reprt that even as we are now a quarter of the way into 2021, I am already near to my year’s reading gaol. GoodReads says I am sitting on 26 books out of the 30 I set for myself at the start of the year. Jaaay me. Lets take a look at the books I reviewed in April shal we?

History of video gamesA History of Video Games – Jeremy Parish
I wonder where the inspiration to start writing Game reviews came from… I am joking, the itch has been there before this book cam along. A History of Video Games was exactly hat it says on the cover, a look of where it originated from and expanding to where we are today. The one thing it left out was how fucking greedy certain publishers have become and the shitty things going on behind the scene, but I am glad it was left out as it is just very disheartening for me as a gamer. I did have fun with this one as much as I had with The History of Rum.

First HereticThe First Heretic – Aaron Dembski-Bowden
First Heretic was a great novel. It was a novel that almost brought me close to sympathising with the Word Bearers, but luckily I am made of sterner stuff. My first Dmbski Bowden novel was a success and I am exited to try out more titles by this author.

burning WhiteThe Burning White – Brent Weeks
Burning White was the final book in the Lightbringer series. A series I decided to give a 5 out of 5 just because of the journey it sent me on. There was enough in this series to keep me paying attention and the numerous curveballs that came out of nowhere were just such delights. I think this series will by on my top lists for quite a while from now on.

Deacon of woundsDeacon Of Wounds – David Annandale
Deacon of Snooze was a bit of a let down if Salty is to be believed. He took his first crack at a Warhammer novel and ended up hating it. He probably hates me too now…

Alita Iron CityAlita Battle Angel
Alita: Battle Angel – Iron City – Pat Cadigan
Alita: Battle Angle – Pat Cadigan
I audibled these two back to back and had quite a nice trip. Having seen the movie a while ago I knew what would happen in the novelization. Iron City was also great as it gave me more back story on the characters that were in the main novel and movie which I appreciated a lot.

New books:
I got two physical books this month. One that I had been waiting for for a while as it came over from the UK and another I knew I was going to get, but was still amazed that I got it. April saw me receive my first physical review copy from a publisher which I am really proud of personally. It makes me feel that I have grown a lot since deciding to become a book blogger…

prosperoA Little Late Valentine´s Gift…
JennMark a.k.a Spalanz and I are currently doing a buddy read on the 15th Horus Heresy novel. Spalanz is almost finished where I am still at the start of the novel. Mark has stated that he does not like the Space Wolves, so I get why he would power through this one. I am also really glad that some one else joined in. Mark used this as motivation as he always skipped this novel, but hearing JEnn and I was this far into the series already he decided to join because we could hlep with moral support. Hows that working out for you Mark???

The TankiesNet Galley Hits
In my NetGally hits I gave a summery of the grapgic novel above. Exited to see if it is good. In the same post I also got an Aliens novel I am eager to pick up:
Alien infiltrator

Metal Monday:

I missed a whole week of blogging due to tiredness and taking some personal time which resulted in me missing one metal Monday. The rest of the posts were either new releases from bands you might have seen here before as well as a newly discovered one which I feel was a great find.

Dominus Nox- Gal Vorbak
Fear Factory – Disruptor
Psycohonaut – Celestial Dictator

And that was my April in blog form. It got cut in half thanks to me being able to work again. I had my first paycheck last Friday and it feels great to feel that I can breathe again. Work is also easy at the moment, some times some heavy lifting is involved, but the people are kind enough at least to ask if I am oke with it every time. May might see me return to the zoo for a few days, that is if things are allowed to go open. The government threw open the bars and we no longer need to schedule with shops that we want to go shop at. I am eager to see if things will go through as it looks like the hospitals are already under strain and the Indian variant has also touched base here, interesting times we live in!

I will see you all tomorrow with my May reading plans post. Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. Glad to hear the job is continuing to work out 🙂

You mention all the stuff you do on the weekends now. Where does blogging fit into that? Or is it just a week thing? It’s always interesting to see how a change in schedule (whether due to work, etc) changes how we interact online.

    1. I do it normally when i get home after work or i take some time away from all the gaming to write a post or two to schedule it for in the week. Some times i just end up publishing as i finish a post. There is no “set” blog times in my non existent schedule🙂. I will be working on my reading plans for tomorrow as well as my first review for May and Sunday I will be doing the metal Monday part. Thats normally how my weekend starts.

      1. That’s good that you’re not tying yourself down to something that’ll give you stress. I know some people live and die by a schedule (me, for example, hahahaha) and I know that others would die if they even had to think about a schedule.

  2. I hope it will work out, with you job. Here in Poland many sectors are slowly opening im May, even if under strict restrictions. And the vaccines are available to most adults now, I’m scheduled to get my shot of Moderna in ten days… that will slow down the virus, hopefully.

  3. Nice recap.
Good to see you’re on track with your goals and overachieving.
Will be good to hear your thoughts expend to video games as well as movie/book adaptations.
Congratulations on your first physical review book too! Sounds like it’s all going along as planned.

  4. Good news on the job, sir! I think expanding the blog to cover games is a great idea, maybe more 40k games if you’re keeping up with that?! And the movie novels comparative review thing sounds like it could be a great idea! Though could take some work…

As for our Prospero Burns read-along, let’s just say that I wouldn’t have done it without you!! 😃
