TACHIKAWA, TOKYO. AKIRA TAKASHIRO IS A NORMAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO IS DEVOTED TO PLAYING BASKETBALL. IN THE EARLY AFTERNOON ON A DAY THAT SHOULD HAVE GONE LIKE ANY OTHER, A GIGANTIC EARTHQUAKE SUDDENLY STRIKES THE CITY. THERE IN THE SCHOOL RUBBLE, AKIRA WITNESSES A MOUNTAIN OF DEAD BODIES…AND AN UNKNOWN CREATURE THAT EATS THEM. THE TALE THAT UNRAVELS IS ONE THAT WILL OVERPOWER AND SHOCK YOU!! GET READY FOR AN EXCELLENT URBAN MONSTER ATTACK!
With a blurp like that in All Caps what could go wrong with a book like this? Well, kinda everything I guess, difference of opinions might vary… Creature started out as a rivalry between two friends on the basketball court and regarding a certian love interest that both of the guys had on a special lady. A young student that moved away to a different city from where the main character and his rival lives and goes to school. Then all hell breaks loose and it is a fight (more a constant flight) for their lives as there is something very hungry on the prowl. I have to say that I find the Creature design quite cool and how violent it is portrayed an absolute charm to look at. Even the character art was done really well. The down side of this comic/manga was that youd have spreads with chasing scenes where there was absolutely no dialogue that were great, but soon as the dialogue happened you’d shake your head and just wish the characters would shut up. It was painful. Here is a big creature fucking up your whole world and you are meters away from becoming the next meal, yet you want to reminisce on the one arm you saw when woke up as the shit hit the fan, as well as hope you can save the girl of your dreams while you can barely save yourself… Don’t be stupid… This manga could have a lot of potential if the dialogue could be given a few revisions.
I gave Creature! a 3 out of 5 and only recommend it to people that can handle gory art, body horror and shitty dailogue. Apart from that, not a lot going on but running and being idiots. I’d like to thank NetGalley for accepting my request for this ARC. If it is not evident that getting this for free did not influence my review, I do not know how else to point that out.
Have a good day.
